Wherever rotating machinery components in a drive or driven configuration are to be connected, the problem of damping out unwanted vibration due to acceleration and deceleration or misalignment is addressed by the use of flexible couplings. Many flexible couplings utilize highly damped rubber in combined shear, torsion, flexure or compression, or some combination of loading constraints. The design shown above illustrates an improved rubber coupling based on the use of flexible rubber rods or tubes inserted in holes in the drive and driven flanges joining two pieces of mechanical equipment for rotation.
