This article describes an improved typewriter keyboard design to make typing both easier and faster. It relates to the design published in the IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin 18, 4187-4190 (May 1976), which had the same underlying principles. However, the present design is simpler and more functional. The principle of the proposed "contoured keyboard" is to arrange the typing keys around the home keys so they can be reached more easily and quickly while still maintaining the conventional typing pattern. This is accomplished by designing all non "home keys" at an angle around the eight "home keys" to be individually actuated by short horizontal finger movements without a downward motion. This arrangement allows faster key actuation and employs finger motions that are easier and less tiring on the operator.
