An important aspect of computer design is the facilities provided to ensure serial access to shared resources. The problem usually reduces to one of guaranteeing exclusive access to shared variables, either because the variable is itself the shared resource or, more likely, because access to the resource can be controlled by a shared variable which acts as a lock.
