It would be desirable to use on impact printers the fragile, able self-supporting type of ribbon in current use on typewriters instead of the conventional fabric ribbon. One problem which has arisen in printers with this type of stretchable ribbon is the difficulty in maintaining the ribbon in a properly centered position along a conventional ribbon roller. The present structure provides a serrated roller which minimizes the above problem. The problem with stretchable, self-supporting ribbon is that there is a significant loss in tensile strength whenever printing occurs; this shifts the neutral axis of the ribbon relative to the tracking roller which in turn changes the normal force distribution between the ribbon and the roller.
