Automated means are provided for opening and closing a paper bail without any operator intervention, i.e., without any sort of mechanical linkage between an operator-controlled lever and a follower. A cammed member is provided to control the bail. The surface of the cam member is cut so that when the cam is rotated in the clockwise direction, the bail is put into the paper release mode, i.e., disengaged. The counterclockwise rotation of the cam makes the bail engaged.
