Batch Input Dictation System
This article describes a new dictation system to fully serve a large number of
users. This system offers batch input and continuous availability of the system
to its users as key features.
The input device is a portable dictation recorder which every user has at his
desk, or wherever he travels, thereby giving continuous access to the system.
Each user also has at his desk, or in his department work area, a "Send Station."
This is a recording medium playback unit which will play what the user has
recorded into a centralized unit at high speed making batch processing of
dictation possible. This centralized receiving unit (CRU) monitors a large
number of these Send Stations at one time. Stations which have been loaded
with dictated media so signify to the CRU which sets up a queue for
Two embodiments of this system are described. The first uses disc storage
at the CRU. Dictated audio from the dictation recorder is transferred to the discs
which are then gathered in a buffer within the unit. This buffer stores job
statistics, such as the number of discs in the job, date and time for subsequent
retrieval. A small printer displays this information when retrieved from the CRU
memory, enabling typists to select discs from the buffer according to the job.
The second embodiment uses a captured audio file within the CRU rather
than discs. Incoming audio is stored in a random-access audio file. The CRU
distributes this audio, again...
