In text processing displays, it is often desirable to have the capability of providing information other than the conventional coded characters, i.e., the capability of displaying simple drawings or signatures or data graphs and other geometrics. Because techniques for the display of noncoded information are generally expensive and cumbersome, most text processing systems find it inefficient to provide the capability for carrying out such auxiliary graphics and the latter often has to be done manually in spaces left blank in the hard copy finally produced in the text processing system.
