Removal Of Contention For Card Deck Resource
A simple scheme, as shown in the figure, has been developed whereby a
mag card deck can be effectively shared between a mag card word processor
and a communications feature.
In the noncommunicating mode, the switch hardware (SW HDW) continually
monitors the E and F lines and allows the E signal to pass directly to the
typewriter electronics input (E'). Therefore, it always knows if a mag card is on
the baseplate, or in the process of going from the pack feed or single card slot to
the baseplate, or in the process of going from the baseplate to the stacker or
single card slot. This total awareness of the position of the mag card allows the
inhibiting of switching to the communications mode if a card is being processed
under control of the word processor electronics.
When the communications electronics desires control of the card deck and it
is not being used by the word processor electronics, the E' line input to the word
processor electronics is activated by the switch logic. This makes it appear to
the word processor electronics as if there is a mag card in the single-card slot on
the card deck. The word processor electronics will never try to access the card
deck until the E' line condition is removed, although the rest of the word
