A peripheral subsystem to a host computer usually includes a control unit (CU) having a microprocessor (UP) with a memory. A plurality of devices D1, D2, D3, etc., are connected to the CU for operations with the host. Error status of the device is important for diagnosing errors as well as indicating operational status of the subsystem. Generally, the error data for a device consists of a fixed length record containing the fault symptom code, generated by the CU, and the supporting data from the device for the error. All errors that are unrecoverable in the subsystem are logged as they occur during a host operation.
