Usually operation code bits are attributes of an instruction to be executed. Improved operation, particularly in microprocessors, is found by using the operation code as an index into an attribute table. From the attribute table the sequences of microinstructions are identified for executing the instructions. In particular, the IBM System/370 instruction set can be easily executed on the microprocessor using the index to attribute technique.
