A video recorder is provided in which the recording tracks are parallel to the tape edge and have lengths sufficiently short to assure good tracking once the head is servoed onto its beginning. This solves the problem which arises in conventional helical scan recording formats where tension on the tape, as well as hydroscopic and thermal effects, alter the angle of the tracks relative to the edge of the tape. When this occurs, there is the possibility of slewing over more than one track during each revolution of the read/ write head.
