Quick Trim High Aspect Ratio Resistor
Resistors requiring high length-to-width (aspect) ratios are used to create
high resistor values relative to the resistor film resistivity.
Shown above is one method which may be used to achieve this. A serpentine
resistor pattern is formed having the numbered squares which together with
electrodes 1 and 2 form a trim excursion from a little over 1 square to 59
squares. To allow the resistor to be trimmed to the desired value, a third
electrode 3 is formed in contact with the base of the resistor. With electrode 3 in
place, the resistor value is basically 18 squares since the basic path of the
current is through R1, electrode 3 and R2.
Trimming is accomplished by separating electrode 3 from
resistor segments R1, R2 and R3 to achieve an ultimate of 59 squares.
A partial trim cut would achieve a desired resistor value
applicable within 18 to 59 squares. This method will result in a
substantial reduction in trim time since less units of trim travel
and travel indices are required.
