Abstract

This arrangement provides uniform deletion of bits in an excess length bit stream by using a quotient register, a fraction register, a counter and an adder. A table of quotients and fractions for different input widths or heights of characters will accomplish the size normalization task of up to four to one reduction. A bigger reduction ratio than four to one is possible with reduced efficiency. The uniform deletion is achieved by adding fractions to the adder and using the carry bit generated by the adder to control the exceptional retention for the bit. The resolution of the deletion is controlled by the number of bits used in the fraction register and adder' This method guarantees that the maximum difference between deletion intervals is one.
