A line switching system is a real-time system in which a number of independent pieces of work have to be accomplished in parallel. It is modeled as a set of cooperating asynchronous processes. To each proces s is associated a unit input queue. Processes communicate with each other by enqueuing messages on their respective input queues. The term "Abstract Machine" is used to refer to a process and its associated input queue.
