Electronic typewriters utilize a look-up table which characterizes the operation of each key. Each key may be characterized several ways depending on the various machine states. For example, depressing the "U" key prints a lower case or capital letter depending on the state of the shift key, or it may start a function if a code key is simultaneously depressed.
