Digital communication systems cannot always be turned off for field servicing. However, if repairs are to be made to the system while operating, the addition or deletion of circuit cards from circuit boards upon which they are mounted can introduce noise to the system causing soft failures. A technique is disclosed herein for changing a circuit card on a circuit board in an on-going operating system without the introduction of unwanted noise.
