The error correcting code matrix shown in Fig. 1 is capable of detecting 4-bit package errors in addition to correcting 1-bit random errors. It can also be used to correct chip failures in memories packaged 3-bits per chip while correcting 1-bit random errors by rearrangement of the bit positions of the original code, as shown in Fig. 2 on the next page.
