I/O adapters in a computer system indicate their speed requirements to the channel or central processing unit (CPU) which then sends the adapters clock signals at the appropriate speed. This arrangement permits higher speed I/O devices to transfer their data at a higher clock rate and yet allows other I/O devices implemented in slower speed technology to attach to the same channel. Thus, a single synchronous channel can be used. Increased channel bandwidth is achieved with only minor modification to existing hardware.
