Workstation 10 (Fig. 1) includes a minimum logic adapter 15, gas panel display 20 and keyboard 25 which are connected by a fiber-optic link 40 to a workstation controller 50 which includes a microprocessor 55 and control storage 60. The fiber-optic link 40 connects to a driver receiver 11 (Fig. 2), and depending upon the state of a transmit trigger, not shown but contained in control 16, either the receiver or driver will be activated. Normally, adapter 15 is in the receive mode and remains in this mode until polled by workstation controller 50. When adapter 15 is polled by workstation controller 50, it enters the transmit state to send the contents of keystroke/status buffer 26 to the workstation controller.
