To prevent the wear of two incompatible but sliding surfaces, such as a magnetic recording disk and an associated magnetic head, wear-resistant materials are used as spacers between the two surfaces. These spacer materials are deposited using modified masking techniques. The spacers may be a series of dots or continuous rails. If dots are employed, they can be hemispherical, frustrums of cones, elliptical, pyramidal, or the like.
