An improved system for producing multiple beams of constant beam power
from an acousto-optic (A/O) modulator is described.
The deflection angle in an A/O modulator is roughly proportioned to the drive
frequency, and multiple beam operation can be achieved by driving the A/O
modulator with multiple frequencies. In this case, the incoming beam power is
distributed over the outgoing beams roughly according to the ratio of drive power
in the individual drive frequencies. The power in each beam is changed if there
is a change in the number of output beams.
A system in which unused beams can be blocked off by masking to provide n
out of (2n-1) beams. each with constant beam power, is described. A specific
example of such a system with n=2 is as follows. Laser 10 produces beam 11
directed to modulator 12, which is driven by drive voltage of suitable frequency
and amplitude at terminal 14. The undeflected beam is blocked by knife edge
16 and the beam generated by drive voltage at frequency f(1) is blocked by knife
edge 18. The beam 20 is generated by drive voltage at frequency f(2), and
beam 22 is generated by drive voltage at frequency f(3). When beam 22 only is
needed for recording, then modulator 14 is driven with frequencies f(1) and f(3).
