Transceiver Module Assembly
A transceiver module employs component subassemblies consisting of
source and detector substrates with fiber couplers, a fiber connector, and a multi-
A source substrate consists of a metal block 1 (Fig. 1) with
an H cross-section. An LED chip 2 is aligned with the center of the
H so that an emitting edge is flush with the front face of the block.
The block serves as an electrical connection from the positive
power supply lands, or rails, 3 to the anode contact of the LED chip.
The block also serves as a low resistance thermal path to a
multi-chip substrate 4 by means of two feet 5 formed at the bottom of
the H cross-section. Connection to the cathode side of the LED is
made by an insulated lead frame 6.
The detector substrate 7 (Fig. 2) consists of a diode disposed in a printed
circuit card 8, with a printed land pattern for forming an electrical connection
similar to that used for the source diode. A support bracket 9 is attached to the
back of the printed card piece to provide both a power supply connection and
thermal path between the diode and the multi-chip substrate 4.
Molded fiber coupling blocks 10 are attached to fiber pigtails 11 from a
connector block 12. The coupling blocks are aligned with and attached to the
source and detector substrates to provide maximum optical coupling to the fibers.
