There is shown a FIFO (first in, first out) buffer intermediate a channel and device each operated in an asynchronous demand/response mode. The improvement relates to a method for reconciling the dissimilar lengths of data strings transferred from the channel to a data streaming device such as a DASD or (direct access storage device) through the FIFO buffer, which buffer is operated in a circular mode in the automatic data transfer portion of a control unit. The string length is a function of the recording format, direction of transfer, and CCW (channel control word) type.
