Process For Obtaining A Uniform Electrodeposit On A High Resistivity Wire
In electrodepositing metal on a length of wire of considerable resistivity a
nonuniform conically shaped deposit is obtained due to the IR drop along the
A tungsten wire required an improvement in its strength under use so that it
would not bend when the wire was used in an electroerosion printer. At the
same time it was required that the means of strengthening the wire would not
interfere with the use of the wire itself. This process produces a simple means
of strengthening the wire, and produces a high degree of uniformity both along
the length of the wire and around its circumference.
Tungsten wires of 25 (mu) m and 50 (mu) m diameter are transmitted through
a continuous system, as shown in Fig. 1. The wire on drum 10 is precleaned by
passing it over TEFLON* rollers and through a degreasing agent 11, an acid
solution 12 of 1:1HC1:H(2)0, and a water rinse 13. The wire is then passed
through a bronze wool cathode connection 14 and a leakproof seal 15 into a
tubular plating cell 16 (30 cm long x 2.5 cm dia.). The solution, as described in
the table, is circulated through the cell, and connections are made to a wire mesh
anode. As the wire emerges from the cell, it passes through another leakproof
seal 17 to a motorized take-up reel 18 which zig-zags back and forth in similar
fashion to the even loading of a sewing machine bobbin.
