Method For Reading Cards To Memory Full In A Text Processing System
In a text processing system having a limited electronic memory and
keyboard and magnetic card input devices, a method is provided for limiting input
from the magnetic cards to prevent memory overflow.
A "key limit" indicator is provided to lock the keyboard when less than 100
vacant memory positions remain. A "memory full" indicator is provided which
halts all processing when the system has entered control characters such that
less than 8 vacant memory positions remain. The magnetic cards contain a
maximum of 100 characters per track. Characters are read from the magnetic
cards into a one track buffer and then transferred to memory. A buffer limit
indicator is provided to indicate when there are less than 128 vacant memory
Magnetic cards generated by keying to key limit (100 positions left) are
rejected by the system when read since the buffer limit condition occurs before
all the characters on the card have been transferred to the system.
This problem is solved by proper utilization of the key limit and buffer limit
indicators. This utilization is shown in the flow diagram.
Characters are read from the card to the buffer and then transferred to the
memory as long as the buffer limit indicator is not on. The first occurrence of
buffer limit will follow the buffer to memory transfer. If the magnetic card track
