Electronic Abbreviated Directory
This directory provides a quick and easy method of specifying the recipient
of an audio message in an audio communications system.
Mechanical list finders are common desk top items which allow rapid access
of alphabetized pages of frequently used telephone numbers. A pointer is
adjusted to the desired page and a release button pressed to open the cover,
revealing the selected page. The present technique combines the conventional
mechanical list finder with (1) appropriate holes in the list pages for buttons and
status lights, (2) a pointer sensor to sense the position of the index pointer when
the cover release is pressed, and (3) an array of lights associated with the page
Assume, for example, that the alphabet is divided into 16 groups of
characters, each group corresponding to a page in the electronic directory. If
each page is allowed to contain 16 names, the directory has the capability of
listing up to 256 names.
The directory can be used to cause automatic dialing of a phone
number for a current conversation or for playing a recorded message
when the recipient of the message eventually answers his phone. As
