Abstract

Conventional paper drive rollers for paper transport systems have been fabricated from elastomers. Several problems are associated with conventional elastomer drive rollers. For example, elastomers are difficult and expensive to grind. The diameter of elastomer drive rollers change with wear. With a relatively soft elastomer drive roller it is very difficult to predict exactly where the driving radius occurs when a back-up force is introduced to enable driving. Additionally, any changes in the force of the back-up rollers change the driving radius of the elastomer roller. The enumerated defects make it difficult to design a precise velocity control for a paper transport system when elastomer driving rollers are used.
