Typical originals that are to be copied are line copies in which less than 15%
of the original contains information. Only a small percentage of originals (for
example, pictures and-halftones) have a high information content. The high
information content originals are called "wet copies". It is desirable, from a dryer
power requirement standpoint to run these wet copies at a slower speed while
running the normal low coverage copies at normal speed. By carefully selecting
the coverage at which the machine is slowed, the dryer power can be minimized
without significantly affecting machine throughput. The original document in an
ink jet copier is scanned and converted to digital information prior to
reproduction. As such, the percentage coverage on an original document can be
easily computed. The problem then is to find a suitable method and apparatus to
slow the machine.
One way used in the prior art to slow the machine down is to have separate
paper transports for printing and drying. The printing transport is run at a
constant speed. The dryer transport speed would be controlled based on the
percentage coverage. The feed rate would also need to be slowed. This type of
mechanical buffering results in increased complexity and a longer machine.
