Abstract

Devices which utilize charge to store information are susceptible to the effect of alpha particles impinging on the active storage area. The alpha particles generate electron-hole pairs, and the electrons are swept into storage areas in devices using positive gates. The greatest sources of alpha particles are the package materials, such as lids, ceramics, solder joints and the wire used in wire bonding.
