In many electronic data processing machines, Reference (R) and Change (C) bits are used to indicate the status of 2K pages of memory. Page-in and page-out selections are done according to the status of the R and C bits. For uniprocessor environments, detection of a parity error on these two bits causes a system damage machine check.
