Where an optical scanner is to be used to read Universal Product Code (UPC) labels on supermarket products, it may be desirable to build the scanner with a 360 degree scan field. A 360 degree scan field can be defined as a field in which scanning beams sweep the product both as it approaches and as it moves beyond a viewing window. The advantage of such a scanner is that an operator can orient products with the UPC label on either a leading or trailing surface of the product. Where the scanner has less than a 360 degree scan field, the product must typically be oriented with the UPC label at a leading surface of the product.
