We have made water soluble dyes which, when applied to paper, exhibit exceptional water-soak resistance. Dye molecules of this class consist of a polymer backbone to which individual chromophores are chemically attached. Water solubility is conveyed through solubilizing groups on the backbone and/or pendant chromophores. Maximum optical absorption is obtained by attaching one chromophore to every repeat unit of the polymer.
