A method for making a multi-nozzle membrane ink jet head is shown and
The ink jet head is fabricated by producing a sputtered coating on a suitable
metal substrate 10. The material of the coating and the substrate should be
chosen so that their thermal expansion coefficient is similar. For a substrate of
invar (an iron-nickel alloy), a silicon carbide (SiC) layer 12 is used. The SiC layer
is sputter-deposited on the smooth invar substrate to a suitable thickness, such
as 4-6 microns. A trough 14 is produced in the metal substrate, to extend part
way through, by a suitable technique, such as electro-discharge machining. The
trough is then continued or individual holes 16 are opened in the trough using
electro-chemical machining up to the interface between the SiC and the metal.
Electro-chemical machining ceases at the interface because of the difference in
electrical conductivity between the metal and the SiC. Then the openings which
form nozzles 18 are produced in the SiC layer using conventional techniques,
such as plasma etching.
