A method and means for generating source code sequences for interactive applications utilizing a programmable graphics display system operable in interactive mode. The method steps include (1) entering information onto a display surface in the form intended when the program to be created is run, (2) reading, formatting and labeling the entered data by an interpretive program resident in the system, and (3) compiling object code sequences from the formatted and labeled data elements. Thus an end-user specifies what a program is to display and how it is to react when running, and the system compiles a program to behave as specified. It is a simple case of programming by example.
