An ink jet is normally used for printing. However, it can also be used for
display by printing on a substrate, such as MYLAR*, and cleaning the substrate
when the display is not needed.
The following are alternative developments to using the ink jet
on a cleanable substrate, such as MYLAR. (1) Use of a water (or other homogeneous fluid) jet to write on a
substrate. The result would not be visible. (2) Use of a display substrate that would scatter light in the wet
state differently than the dry state. (3) Use of a fluid that is biased in temperature such that it can
deposit on thermally sensitive material (such as liquid
crystal) and be thermally written on the substrate.
The display approaches noted here do not have the problem of cleaning after
writing, as does the characterized prior approach. It needs an illumination
system and needs a separate fluid supply system. However, the fluid does not
have to be recirculated, and a great part of the mechanical section as well as
electronics can be shared, since the deflection principle of the two jets can be
virtually identical. Therefore, it can be a very low-cost display when attached to
