Method To Improve Properties of Thermoplastics
The properties of thermoplastics, especially mechanical properties such as
creep resistence, are improved with the addition of boron fibers.
Boron fibers have been used successfully to reinforce thermoset materials.
Thermoplastics are today reinforced with glass and carbon fibers. Both glass
and carbon fibers improve the mechanical properties of thermoplastics, such as
flexural modulus, tensile strength, and creep. Carbon fibers produce a greater
improvement on these properties than that produced by glass fibers. This is
mainly due to the higher elastic modulus offered by the carbon fibers.
Boron fibers are considered to produce an even greater improvement on
these properties because boron fibers hsve an elastic modulus higher than
carbon fibers. The elastic moduli in pounds per square inch (psi) of these fibers
are as follows: 10,500,000 for glass, 32,000,000 for carbon, and 58,000,000 for
boron. Thermoplastics filled with boron fibers may be satisfactorily used on
machine plastic components, such as bobbins and armature assemblies.
