Abstract

Pluggable meters are used with office copiers to prevent unauthorized use. The copier is provided with a receptacle adapted to receive a small pluggable meter capable of desk storage and hand transport to the copier. So long as a pluggable meter is not inserted in the copier's meter socket, the copier's "start button" is inhibited. When a pluggable meter is inserted into this socket, the copier is enabled and copies can be run. The total of all copies is accumulated in the copier's resident billing meter, whereas each pluggable meter contains a resident counter which totals the number of copies made with that particular pluggable meter.
