In certain instances, especially with mechanisms such as typewriters, is is advantageous to provide means to inhibit reverse motion of a driven member. Conventionally this means a ratchet and pawl arrangement with a very fine tooth pitch on the ratchet. With fine teeth on the ratchet, manufacture becomes expensive and tooth strength in the reverse direction becomes a significant design factor.
