A multisystem interconnect facility (MSIF), as presently contemplated, comprises a network of separated microprocessors and adapters linked into a single system entity by a high-speed ring communication medium of specific form. The MSIF is adapted specifically for providing data management and data communication services in a highly transparent mode relative to host data processing systems of various architectural forms. Operating through shared access to main storage in the host systems, the MSIF microprocessors locate and retrieve data sets specified in symbolic (location-independent) terms by requests enqueued in storage by host processors.
