We have obtained a transition metal complex showing a nemati phase. The complex bis-[4-(n-butyl)-styryl-dithiolato]-nickel forms shiny, almost black leaflets which, above 116.9 degrees C, undergo a phase transition to a nematic state. The complex stays nematic up to 200 degrees C. However, at temperatures above 140 degrees C it begins to decompose, and at 200 degree C the rate of decomposition is quite high.
