Vertical Reference Coding For Digital Gray Level Images

A data compression scheme for digital gray-level images is presented here that effectively utilizes vertical redundancy. Since in gray-level digital images each picture element (pixel) has several bits of gray level information, the storage requirements and/or transmission time can easily become excessive, making data compression essential. Unlike black/white data, in which one knows that the runs alternate black and white, for each run the value of the gray-level must also be indicated.
