Apparatus is described which solves the problem of proliferation of opcodes created by numerous data-types in computers which have no data type information stored in memory for the general purpose registers. In a system of K registers, for example, vector registers of N bits per register, K tag registers are used such that only one add instruction is required for a plurality of different data types. Normally, an individual add instruction is required for each different data type.
