Abstract

Contention is defined as all the cases where a task is delayed in its execution because the resource it needs is not available. Contention analysis appears to be a complete new way of looking at the system which is different from the traditional utilization analysis. The contention analysis is more useful, as the first step, in the tuning of highly multiprogrammed systems, since it shows where the parallel processing does not occur.
