Axial disk locations are identified by one of a set of spiraling edge marks of the magnetic-type disks. The marks are either optically or magnetically sensed. Rotational position of the marks with respect to zero position indicator (ZPI) of a digital tachometer indicates which disk is being accessed. Plural groups of spirals are employed with coarse positioning of the carriage achieved via a stepper motor using known open-loop positioning techniques. Positioning within a group of spirals is achieved, as described below.
