Zero Insertion Force Socket For Grid Modules
Insertion force of modules or plugs can be a problem with delicate devices
carrying a large number of connection pins.
To allow for insertion of the pins into a socket with little or no insertion force,
the illustrated socket is so designed that the module or plug pins do not touch the
socket contacts during the insertion process. The pins are moved into contact
with the socket en masse in a second operation. This socket uses conductive
elastomeric material for connecting socket contacts to the module pins.
Strips of material 10, 12, which are conductive through the transverse axis
but insulating along the longitudinal axis, are placed over the rows of socket
contacts 14, 16 respectively, which have flattened heads 18. A movable cover
20 that guides module pins 22, 24 and properly locates them also retains the
conductive strips 10, 12. Cover 20, with the module or the plug element 26
carrying the pins 22, 24, is then moved either horizontally (direction A) to press
pins 22, 24 into the material 10, 12 or downward (direction B) to compress the
material 10, 12 so that it contacts pins 22, 24 and completes respective
connections to heads 18 of socket contacts 14, 16.
This connection arrangement is suitable for high density, delicate structures.
