This switch allows a single computer bit to switch the polarity of the mass spectrometer electron multiplier and ion optic circuits to select either positive or negative ions. The switch has three states: positive ions, negative ions and off. It provides a time delay in the off state of approximately 3.5 seconds to protect the electron multiplier detector and high voltage power supplies (about 1500 VDC) during the switching operation.
