An ink jet printing system employs a single droplet stream 1 from source 2 which has a velocity such that it travels parallel to target paper 3. The droplets 4 are charged by electrode 5. At the point where droplets 4 reach their terminal velocity, their spacing is completely periodic. After this point is placed a vertical array 6 of directing electrodes 7 so as to provide a field, when biased, in a direction perpendicular to both the plane of the paper and the stream.
