Magnetic read/write heads can be provided with enhanced wear properties if the gap is formed using ceramic material, such as barium titanate. Such ceramic material has wear properties approaching those of the ferrite elements which define the gap, causing even wear of the head rather than the uneven wear encountered where the gap material wears faster to expose ferrite edges that induce magnetic media wear and degrade the signal.
