Apparatus is provided for loading control storage in a microcontroller for controlling an input/output device of a computer system. The data to be entered into control storage is contained in main storage of the computer system. The microcontroller, until its control storage is loaded, has no functional capability. An initializing program is executed in the processor of the computer system, and, as a result of this initializing program, the microcontroller is initialized, and thereafter, data is transferred under cycle steal control from main storage into control storage of the microcontroller. After the data transfer has been completed, the processor executes a termination program.
