A general purpose database structure is described. The structure is simple and places few constraints on the way the user interconnects data elements in the structure. The user may impose various types of constraints on the structure to tailor it to particular applications. The basic structure is general enough not only to record the user's data but also provides natural ways to record data structure constraints. Application programs operating on the database can manipulate user data and data structure description information in a uniform way.
